I don't understand why Russia, a massive country, needs to support these rebel states in Ukraine. It also seems like a smear tactic to refer to the Ukrainian fighters as neo-Nazis based on involvement with Germany before any of these fighters were born. Just trying to understand. The rebel pro-Russian states sound very harsh in their treatment of drug addicts.

The Ukrainian fighters see themselves as neo-Nazis. They worship the Nazis, as the Nazis were heroes to the Ukrainian Nationalists, who fought with the Nazis AGAINST the USSR. Remember when Justin Trudeau introduced that old Nazi to the Canadian Parliament as a hero who "fought against the Russians in WWII"? And he got a standing ovation? That is how the Ukrainians see Nazis - as anti-Russian HEROES. And they are proud - PROUD - to wear the Nazi insignias, do the Sieg Heil salute and espouse all the things Hitler believed in. They are carrying on the tradition of their parents and grandparents who joined the Waffen SS and killed Russians for Hitler but also for themselves, so they could have a Ukrainian state.

As far as those rebel states are concerned, there are millions of Russians living in those states who need protection, and many millions more who live in Russia but have family there. Putin was under tremendous domestic pressure to do something to stop the killing.
